			<description><![CDATA[Security officials in northern Takhar province say a local rebel commander involved in militant activities has surrendered to government.

A source in the National Directorate of Security (NSD) told Pajhwok Afghan News on Thursday commander Rasul had surrendered along with six supporters.

The intelligence official revealed the commander also turned in a rocket launcher, five Klashnikov assault rifles and a machine gun.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[The prices of Iranian gold, flour and diesel came down while the rates of other daily-use commodities remained unchanged during the outgoing week in Kabul, retailers said on Thursday.

Abdul Baseer, a jeweller in the Lisa-i-Mariam neighbourhood, told Pajhwok Afghan News that one gram of Iranian gold was sold for 1,300 afghanis, registering a decrease of 50 afghanis, compared to last week's price.

But the rate of Arabian gold remained unchanged at 1500 afghanis; said the jeweler, who linked the price reduction to global market trends.]]></description>

The assailants targeted the Presidential Palace, Serena Hotel, Faroshgah, Gulbahar Business Centre and many other places, fuelling panic and chaos across the city. The tweet was posted by a Kabul-based British woman, who has a twitter account http://twitter.com/girlofgordon.

Though its use for news coverage remains limited to foreign journalists based in Afghanistan, micro-blogging, social networking and video-sharing services like www.twitter.com, www.facebook.com, www.myspace.com and www.youtube.com are steadily becoming more and more popular with the Afghans.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[A new building for the Herat Provincial Council has been constructed at the cost of 120,000 provided by the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), an official said on Saturday.

Governor's spokesman Naqibullah Erwin told Pajhwok Afghan News the three-storey building had a meeting hall and several offices. The building was erected on 200 square metres of land over last seven months.

General Muhammad Nawab, a senior military officer in the province, told Pajhwok ‎Afghan News the roadside blast happened in Bak district. District chief Lutfullah ‎Babakarkhel was injured in the explosion. ‎

The district chief was on the way from home to his office. Nawab said Babakarkhel ‎suffered minor injuries while his vehicle was damaged. He was rushed to hospital for ‎treatment. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Workers of the Kabul Municipality Friday embarked on a cleanliness campaign in this heavily-polluted central capital after a long suspension of work, an official said.

Municipality officer Nisar Ahmad Habibi told Pajhwok Afghan News 600 workers and 63 vehicles were taking part in the ongoing operation. He said the weekly operation would be conducted every Friday.

The municipality has decided to remove 600 cubic feet of garbage from the second district of Kabul to the Kazag area, located around 20 kilometres east of the city.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Residents collected on Friday charred and mutilated bodies of their relatives killed in a deadly suicide attack in the Deh Rawood district of south-central Uruzgan province.

Administrative chief of the district Khalifa Sadaat told Pajhwok Afghan News police kept the bodies in the district centre following Thursday's explosion and handed them over to their relatives this morning.

Most of the bodies were mutilated beyond recognition, Sadat said, adding there were pieces of human flesh scattered everywhere at the site of the suicide attack. The bomber was reportedly kept in a basement of a hotel owned by Haji Nasim.]]></description>

A commander of the Afghan National Army (ANA), Col. Zainuddin informed Pajhwok Afghan News the illegal group was detained with the cooperation of US forces from a house in Chishma-i-Aspha village of Gulran district.

The armed men who were trafficking narcotics to neighbouring Turkmenistan were captured with a carload of 400 kilograms of opium, he said, adding the opium was burnt after being recovered.]]></description>
